A man in Norwich has discovered a curious new property to the much-hyped notes which could well come in handy for lovers of old records

An incredible video has emerged of a man playing a vinyl record – using just a plastic five pound note.

The footage, shot on Monday in Norwich, begins with the man holding the new polymer-based note by one of its corners.

He then lowers it to a turntable, holding it steady against the surface of the vinyl record.

The note acts like a needle on an old-fashioned record player and starts playing the record – which on this occasion was the aptly chosen 1970s hit from ABBA called ‘Money, Money, money’.

As it turns out, the new plastic five pound notes have a rather curious property of being just about able to play vinyl records with the aid of a contact microphone and an amplifier.

The new notes were launched last month with Bank of England governor Mark Carney calling them a “cleaner, stronger and safe” alternative.
